Who needs an Austrian student residence permit?

If you are a non-EU/EEA citizen and you plan to study in Austria for more than 6 months, you need a student residence permit. The official German name is Aufenthaltsbewilligung Student. This permit allows you to live in Austria for the duration of your studies and can be renewed annually.

EU/EEA citizens and Swiss nationals do not need a residence permit. They only need to register their address (Anmeldebescheinigung) within 4 months of arrival.

For stays under 6 months, a Visa D (national visa) may be sufficient depending on your nationality. For stays under 90 days, a Visa C (Schengen visa) or visa-free entry applies.

Where to apply

Most non-EU students must apply at the Austrian embassy or consulate in their home country before traveling to Austria. You cannot apply after arrival unless you are from a visa-free country.

Citizens of visa-free countries (including the United States, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Japan, South Korea, and others) can enter Austria without a visa for up to 90 days and may apply directly at the local immigration authority after arrival. In Vienna, this is the MA35 (Magistratsabteilung 35). In other Austrian cities, apply at the local Bezirkshauptmannschaft (BH).

However, the OeAD (Austria's Agency for Education and Internationalisation) recommends that even visa-free nationals apply from abroad. If processing at MA35 takes longer than 90 days, you may be required to leave the Schengen area, which could interrupt your studies.

The following documents are required for a first-time application. All non-German documents must be translated into German by a sworn translator. Depending on your nationality, documents must be either apostilled (Hague Convention countries) or diplomatically legalized (non-Hague countries).

Start your application at least 6 months before your planned arrival in Austria. Document preparation (apostilles, translations, bank arrangements) takes time before you can even submit.

Step-by-step process

1

Receive your admission letter. Your Austrian university sends you a Zulassungsbescheid confirming your enrollment.

2

Prepare your documents. Gather all 9 required documents. Get translations, apostilles or legalizations, and arrange your financial proof. This step takes 2 to 8 weeks depending on your country.

3

Apply at the embassy. Submit your application in person at the Austrian embassy or consulate in your country. You will sign the application form in front of embassy staff.

4

Wait for the decision. The embassy forwards your application to the competent residence authority in Austria. Processing takes 1 to 3 months. You must wait in your home country for the decision.

5

Receive your Visa D. If approved, the embassy issues a Visa D valid for 4 months, allowing you to enter Austria.

6

Travel to Austria and register. Within 3 working days of arriving at your Austrian address, register at the local registration office (Meldeamt) to obtain your Meldezettel (address registration confirmation).

7

Collect your residence permit. Visit the competent immigration office (MA35 in Vienna, BH in other cities) to collect your residence permit card. Bring your Meldezettel, admission confirmation, and health insurance proof.

Renewal

The student residence permit is typically valid for 12 months and can be renewed annually. To renew, you must show continued enrollment (Fortsetzungsbestätigung), academic progress of at least 16 ECTS credits per academic year, and continued proof of financial means and health insurance.

Apply for renewal at the local immigration office before your current permit expires. You may legally stay in Austria while your renewal is being processed, even if the current permit expires during this time.

Working while studying

Non-EU students with a valid residence permit can work part-time: Bachelor students up to 10 hours per week, Master and PhD students up to 20 hours per week. Full-time work is permitted during semester breaks.

The work permit (Beschäftigungsbewilligung) must be applied for by your employer at the AMS (Arbeitsmarktservice) at least 6 weeks before employment begins.

After graduation

After completing your degree, you can apply for a 12-month extension of your residence permit to search for employment in Austria. If you find a qualified position, you can apply for a Red-White-Red Card (Rot-Weiß-Rot Karte), which grants residence and work rights for up to 2 years.
