It depends on your country and Austria is strict about it. An apostille only works if your country joined the Hague Apostille Convention and Austria did not object to that.
Kazakhstan, India, Turkey, Russia, Ukraine, Brazil and United States use an apostille.
Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Iran and Egypt need full legalisation: certification by your own foreign ministry, then legalisation at the Austrian embassy.
Legalisation takes longer, so order it early. If you are not sure, ask here and we check your country for you.
